Japanese Kimono in Black and Silver

Sylvia has enjoyed recreating Barbie's Japanese exclusive kimonos so much that she has decided to create this beautiful kimono that can be seen on page 55 in the book Barbie in Japan. For those of you who don't own this lovely book by Keiko Shibano, I have shown a scan from page 55 of the book in the last picture. Sylvia used vintage silver and black metallic lurex for the kimono. For the obi, she found a lovely gold and white brocade. For the obi-jime cord Sylvia used a gold metallic braid entwined with a tiny gold and black cord. For this kimono, Sylvia has added a metallic cotton flowered obiage, which is used to keep the upper part of the obi knot in place. Sylvia has also added a green metallic lurex kimono bag, called a saifu. The cord on the saifu is made of bunka, which was also used back in the 60's by Mattel for these kimono bags. Also included are clear with silver glitter open toe reproduction shoes from Dressmaker Details and short white gloves fashioned from vintage tricot. Sylvia’s kimonos are patterned and sewn exactly as the kimonos were sewn for Barbie in the 1960’s. You will notice the hand stitching on much of Sylvia’s kimonos, as this is the way they are still sewn in Japan today. Sylvia has also chosen to line her kimonos in different colors of silk chiffon. The neck bands are also sewn of different colors. Many of the kimonos that Sylvia has seen for Barbie have different colored linings and neck bands, so Sylvia followed suit. The neck band on this kimono is white crepe, and the lining is a luscious lavender silk chiffon which looks lovely with these kimono fabric colors. Sylvia’s workmanship on this kimono is unmatched by anyone sewing for Barbie today. The only comparison to be made is to the skill of the Japanese seamstresses working for Mattel in the 1960’s. Sylvia was extremely careful in making her pattern and stitches exactly as was done in Barbie’s golden age. For those of you who appreciate Barbie’s 1960’s Japanese fashions, this kimono will not disappoint. It is truly a masterpiece. Barbie collectors will treasure these kimonos for years to come.
