Japanese Kimono

Sylvia has made a fabulous find of authentic silk kimono fabric from Japan. This kimono is fashioned from a luscious silk chirimen (crepe) material patterned in red, green, purple, orange, navy blue, and yellow globes, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, peonies, twinkling ume (a Japanese apricot), on a background of arabesque patterns and traditional kanoko dots. Sylvia has made this kimono in the furisode style, which has long, draping sleeves and is worn by an unmarried woman for a very special occasion. Sylvia’s kimonos are patterned and sewn exactly as the kimonos were sewn for Barbie in the 1960’s. You will notice the hand stitching on much of Sylvia’s kimonos, as this is the way they are still sewn in Japan today. Sylvia has also chosen to line her kimonos in different colors of silk chiffon. The neckpieces are also sewn of different colors. Many of the kimonos that Sylvia has seen for Barbie have different colored linings and neckpieces, so Sylvia followed suit. Sylvia’s workmanship on these kimonos is unmatched by anyone sewing for Barbie today. The only comparison to be made is to the skill of the Japanese seamstresses working for Mattel in the 1960’s. Sylvia was extremely careful in making her pattern and stitches exactly as was done in Barbie’s golden age. Sylvia used a wonderful vintage oh so sparkly silver tinsel lame for the obis. She has used gold and violet braid for the obi-jime cord. This kimono includes the tabi (socks) made of vintage tricot and a velveteen hair ornament with two bangles, all fashioned by Sylvia. For those of you who appreciate Barbie’s 1960’s Japanese fashions, this kimono will not disappoint. It is truly a masterpiece. Barbie collectors will treasure these kimonos for years to come.
